"This is a picture of me in front of the mural at the Bellas Artes Metro Station in Santiago de Chile a couple of blocks from where I lived when I was teaching English there. I could have chosen a picture of the incomparable natural views in Chile, or the tall, modern skyscrapers of Santiago, or a photo of a vineyard or one of Pablo Neruda’s house, all of which are iconic images of the country. However, what I loved most about being in Chile was getting to know the people and culture in my everyday activities rather than seeing touristic sites. For example, I learned so much during the hours I spent each day on the public transit system traveling to work as well as on the Saturdays I spent buying fresh produce in La Vega. Metro Bellas Artes is especially significant because when I first moved to Santiago I used to dread waking up early to be greeted by bustling metro crowds that I had to fight my way through to make it into a metro car. But in the weeks before I was to return to the U.S. I cherished my final metro rides in the city and thought about how I would miss even the most unpleasant parts of my days commuting in Santiago. This is the last picture of me in Santiago before I moved back to the U.S. and a couple of months after I left they painted a new mural over this one."

"Studying abroad this past year in Granada, Spain has given me so many wonderful memories, and trying to summarize it is an incredibly challenging task. It gave me the chance to grow as a person by being completely immersed in a new environment to learn about other cultures, languages, and points of view. The year was a challenge in many ways whether it was studying in a new language or learning to live with other students who did not speak my native language. Through the ups and downs, I am incredibly grateful for the chance to explore new places, make new friends, and embrace a new city as my own for a short time."
